On the surface, What Matters Most is a rumination on author Ann Zalkind’s relationship with her mother, but through personal reflections, Zalkind’s objective was to illustrate universal themes with which almost anyone can identify. Her goal was to create an impressionistic portrait, at times both chilling and poignant; a memoir unlike any other.
A remembrance of her mother, and also various characters from her mother’s world, Zalkind’s collection oftentimes delves into difficult memories, and by doing so, she hopes to address the timeless connection between life, death, and memory.
A Study of Catalan Composer Frederico Mompou's (1893-1987) Musica Callada (Studies in the History & Interpretation of Music)
American music scholar Zalkind addresses interpretive issues in the 28 pieces of Mompou's four-volume M·sica Callada (1959-67). The title loosely translates as Silent Music and is taken from the Spanish mystic and poet St. John of the Cross. She considers harmonic and melodic observations; poetic and philosophical references; Mompou's thoughts on the work; and recorded performances by Herbert Henck, Joseph Colom, and the composer/pianist himself. Her purpose is to explain his style and aesthetic and to promote his compositions as a more frequent choice for piano recitals. She appends the complete score, but provides no index.
